"Atomic Birth" - Altana Pharma Commissioned Competition Winner
(Lenticular print on 1.5' X 1' lenticular film - 2003)

As technology improves and art evolves, more opportunities for new and interesting art media are becoming available to the artist.  Art is an evolution of communication and a vessel for the transformation of thought.  When considering the subject matter that is to make up a work of art, it is equally important to consider the vessel carrying the expression.  If the expression is satisfying it is because the paint was moved in such a way, the drawing was constructed well, or the digital output from a monitor was just right.  Art is a strong relationship between artist and audience, and media and message.  If all of these elements fit together, then it is right to say the work will, in essence, work.

With "Atomic Birth" I was interested in designing a message that encompassed the ideas of change.  With this in mind I spent some time pondering change. The result was the development of several spherical objects which morphed and changed as one moved by the eclipsing lenticular print.

A lenticular print is a print that consists of two main parts; a digital print and an opaque film interlaced with lenticular registration.  The interlaced film acts as a lens that divides the image into several components when viewed at different angles.  When the audience walks by the print, the result is astounding; the print changes shape and form according to the frames that make up the total animation.  I chose the sphere because it is a representation of life itself and as we understand, change is the only real constant in life.  The sphere is a planet, or an atom; a molecular structure or a state of mind.  As such, my intentions of constructing an object of art to represent change and life were satisfied.
